How to use this resource
Oftentimes a student employment position is seen as less valuable in regards to how much it contributes to a student's career development. Many working learners indicate that they don’t even plan to put their student employment role on their resume “because it was just the job I had to get me through college”. We regularly hear from supervisors that they are unsure how to support their working learner's career development because the student employment role is not directly related to the student’s future career of interest.
The work that is facilitated through the use of the career preparation tool is intended to illuminate the many transferable skills working learners are gaining in their student employment role and how those connect to their future career goals. The tool accomplishes that through engaging students in a variety of career exploration and research including completion of career assessments, conducting informational interviews, dissecting job descriptions, enhancing their resume and interview practice.
The career preparation tool is utilized throughout level 3 of the ASU Work+ experience. In tandem with the completion of this tool, working learners are completing the level 3 learning module. This learning module provides guidance and understanding about the value of engaging in these types of career development activities.
