UConn Student Employment: A Vision for Success and Sustainability

With joining The Work+ Collective, the University of Connecticut (UConn) has begun a transformative journey in student employment, recognizing the profound impact it can have on students' academic and professional growth. With a commitment to providing both financial aid and meaningful work experiences, UConn aims to create a comprehensive program that aligns with institutional priorities and values.

Central to UConn's vision is the establishment of a robust student employment program that offers consistent and impactful opportunities for students across various departments. By fostering collaboration and securing institutional support, UConn seeks to ensure the sustainability and long-term success of the program. With hopes to place the initiative within the Center for Career Development, the team underscores its strategic importance and facilitates alignment with other institutional efforts focused on student success and engagement.

While the program has received endorsement from key university leaders, including the President and Provost listing student employment in the university’s 10-year strategic plan, there is a recognition of existing challenges that need to be addressed. Vast inconsistencies in student experiences and lack of current resources highlight the importance of implementing policies and support mechanisms to ensure a positive and inclusive environment for all student employees. UConn is actively gathering data on student supervisors and advocating for greater accountability and consistency in HR records.

In pursuit of continuous improvement, UConn has developed a pilot program to be launched in the Fall 2024 semester and deployed surveys to gather feedback and assess the effectiveness of its initiatives. By collecting data on student success, retention, and belonging, the team aims to inform future decisions and actions, aligning with its overarching strategic plan. Partnerships with key on-campus employers across campus and other institutions through The Work+ Collective serve as a source of inspiration and insight, allowing UConn to benchmark its progress and identify areas for further enhancement.

Despite challenges encountered along the way, UConn remains steadfast in its commitment to providing meaningful experiences for its students. By leveraging the lessons learned and embracing a culture of innovation, the team is ready to shape the future landscape of student employment, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

UConn's dedication to student employment exemplifies its commitment to student success and institutional excellence. Through strategic planning, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making, UConn is laying the foundation for a sustainable and impactful student employment program that will benefit generations of students to come.
