Enhancing Student Employment at VCU and UCF
At both Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the University of Central Florida (UCF), the commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom. In a recent meeting, members of each Work+ team gathered to discuss what we have learned thus far about enhancing the student employment experience.
Centralizing Resources for Student Employment
One of the key initiatives discussed was the development of more centralized processes to streamline access to student employment resources at both VCU and UCF. The goal is to provide a one-stop destination for students, faculty, and staff seeking information on hiring processes, available positions, and relevant policies. At UCF, this looked like a student employment fair held in partnership with the SGA. At VCU, a website is in the works in partnership with HR to centralize resources, policies and tools for student employment. By consolidating disparate resources, both universities aim to simplify the student employment experience and ensure clarity for all stakeholders.
Fostering On-Campus Alliances
The conversation at both universities also emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships with on-campus departments to maximize the impact of student employment initiatives. We both learned how important it was to identify not only the offices involved with student employment, but also individuals within those offices who are equipped and excited to do this change work. Both campuses identified Human Resources, Financial Aid and Career Services as key partners, as well as other offices more specific to each campus.
Utilizing Federal Work Study
Utilizing Work Study (Federal Work Study or FWS) provides students with valuable opportunities to gain practical experience, earn income, and enhance their academic and professional skills. Through work study programs, students can secure part-time jobs on or off campus, with wages subsidized by federal funds. These programs not only help students finance their education but also offer hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom instruction. By participating in work study, students can develop essential workplace skills, build professional networks, and improve their resumes. Moreover, work study programs benefit institutions by providing valuable support services and contributing to the overall campus community. There was consensus between both universities that maximizing work study funds can be an advantage for both students and the institutions.
Moving Forward Together
As VCU and UCF continue to prioritize student employment transformation, collaboration and communication will remain essential. With a shared vision of enhancing the student experience and promoting experiential learning opportunities, both university communities are poised to make a meaningful impact on the lives of their students. Effective change requires regular communication with varied stakeholders, continuous data collection and analysis, and the resulting program changes that will affect long term change.
In conclusion, the meetings at VCU and UCF highlighted the universities' dedication to providing students with valuable employment experiences that complement their academic pursuits. By centralizing resources, fostering partnerships, and utilizing FWS, VCU and UCF are paving the way for students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
